CUT-READINESS

How to tell if an SVG is actually cut-ready

Six checks that separate a file you can cut from a preview that only looks finished.

1. Every path is closed

A cutter follows an outline; an open path is a line it will draw and then stop. Open paths come from auto-tracing and from decorative strokes that were never expanded to outlines.

Open the SVG in Design Space and look at the layer panel: a filled shape should be one closed layer, not a scatter of separate lines.

2. Nothing is thinner than your blade

Every material has a practical minimum. For 651 vinyl on a Cricut, plan for about 1.4 mm; for HTV, closer to 2 mm. Below that the cut will lift during weeding.

The templates here print the measured minimum stroke in the preview, so you can compare it to your material before paying.

3. Floating islands are joined

The centre of a letter O, a dot over an i, the middle of a flower — all need a bridge to the main shape, or they fall out when you weed.

Count the isolated pieces in the preview. If an island has no visible connection, it will not survive.

4. Colour layers map to materials

A "colour" in an SVG is not the same as a layer. One colour may contain dozens of separate shapes, and two colours may accidentally sit in one layer.

In a good layered file, each colour is a named group, and the count matches the number of vinyl sheets you planned.

5. The canvas matches your mat

Artwork sized for a 12 × 24 mat will not fit a 12 × 12 one, and auto-scaling to fit changes the real-world size you designed for.

Check the document dimensions, not the zoom level of the preview.

6. Text is converted to paths

If the file relies on a font that is not embedded, the letters change the moment it opens on another machine.

Select the text in Design Space. If it is editable as text rather than paths, the file is not portable.

Do these checks apply to laser cutting too?
Mostly, yes — kerf replaces blade width, but open paths, floating islands and canvas size still break a file.
